After implementing the MVP curriculum with my advanced 10th grade math students for a few months, I wanted to take a step back and reflect on my observations and how my students have done with these materials.
Things I Love:
Things I Love:
- Students are more actively engaged. It's nearly impossible for students to not participate in class. Because I am able to walk around more, I am able to connect with kids more frequently and keep them focused on the learning. Many of the questions are interesting and able to pull the students into the questions. My students particularly enjoy the continued story line of the different characters.
- Students of all levels have good access points to the lessons. I really appreciate that each lesson has a slow start to allow for kids who are struggling or maybe missed the last lesson to still have access to the current discussion.
- The lessons allow me to leave the front of the room more frequently.
- The lessons allow me to get kids up to the boards more to show student thinking more often.
- It goes very slowly. I think this course is fantastic for regular-level or even slightly below-level students, but my advanced kids are finding it a bit tedious at times.
- I worry that they will not be prepared for IB HL Math courses. There is good math here, but the rigor just isn't what it needs to be to prepare students for IB or AP courses. I find myself having to supplement quite a bit.
